My 2000 3.8 liter Camaro overheated on me. There was no prior indication that there was a problem....No steam just suddenly the check gages light and the temp rising. I was on a major highway and drove to get to a safer place. The car started loosing power and I pulled over. I read in the manual that when the car overheats, it goes into "safe mode" which reduces the power to protect the engine. I checked the hoses and all around and there was no sign of water anywhere. When the car cooled down, I filled it with water and antifreeze. The car started but ran VERY rough. It would not idle. I could not keep the car running and had to have it towed back to my house. Once I got the car back I decided to try to crank it again. It cranked up and ran smoothly but blew out smoke. Once the smoke cleared it ran ok. I only ran it for about 10 minutes and pulled it into my shed. The next day, I cranked the car again, just to see if it would. It cranked right up. A little bit of smoke out of the tail pipe, but then it cleared. Only ran it for about a minute. Then later that day, I cranked it again. It ran VERY rough, and lots of smoke. The next day, once again I tried to crank it. It cranked right up. Just a little smoke. Again, didn't run it long. I tried it again the next day after that. It ran VERY rough and blew smoke. I checked my oil on the car to make sure there was NO water in the oil and there wasn't. It has been suggested that I may have a blown head gasket. Can anyone tell me what you think it may be?? Once the car goes into safe mode, does it have to be reset? Someone please tell me what I need to do!
Thanks! Jeff
